The votes are in!!

Johnathan "JD" Daniels, a student at West Brunswick High School, is the StarNews Student of the Week.

Coach Taylor nominated Daniels calling him a “shining example.” Taylor said his exceptional leadership in the classroom and on the court is “truly commendable.” “With a passion for helping others and a firm belief in his ability to make a difference in the world, Johnathan's dedication and drive make him a standout candidate for this recognition,” Taylor wrote.

According to the results, Daniels earned the top spot, taking 45,052 of the 93,507 votes cast in the poll.

The StarNews asked principals, teachers and guidance counselors from across the area to participate in the Student of the Week program by sending nominations.

The readers got to pick the best of the best in our polls.

In addition to Daniels, the following students were nominated by principals or staff members at their schools:

Jenny Garner, Hoggard High School

Jenny Garner, a senior, was nominated by the Hoggard faculty. Garner will receive the New Hanover County Schools Student Scholarship for Future Teachers and plans to attend the University of North Carolina Wilmington where she will major in elementary education. “Upon completion of her program, Jenny will commit to teaching 4 years in New Hanover County,” the nomination read. It further notes that she was one of four students in the county to receive this scholarship.

Kevin A. Candelo Mosquera, Career Readiness Academy at Mosley

Diane Whitford, school counselor, nominated Kevin A. Candelo Mosquera. “Kevin is a well-rounded senior who excels academically, available to be of service at any time and to everyone, loyal to his friends and his school, and dedicated to his country,” Whitford wrote. She added that Mosquera serves in the Army National Guard, participates in the school’s Pre-K program where he reads to children, is a member of the chess club, participates in leadership class activities, and enjoys playing soccer. Whitford noted he is “accountable, dedicated and trustworthy.” “During all of this, Kevin works part time to give back to his family,” she wrote. Mosquera will be the first of his generation to attend college, and he has been accepted to five major universities. “With all these accolades, he remains unassuming and humble, and a great candidate for this recognition,” Whitford said.

Faye Riebe, Cape Fear Academy

Cape Fear Academy nominated Faye Riebe, a junior, who is a member of the Tri-M Music Honor Society, the National Honor Society, and president of the Green Club. In her role as president of the Green Club, Riebe addressed school administration and encouraged them to transition to transition all plastic on the school’s campus to a corn-based biodegradable plastic. Riebe also served as a delegate at the Washington Youth Summit on the Environment at George Mason University.

Camille Still, Isaac Bear Early College High School

Principal Ronald Villines Jr. nominated Camille Still, calling her “more than deserving” of the honor who is “well-rounded, intelligent, and endlessly kind.” “She is always quick to help a friend in need and has shown her integrity and dedication to her work all year,” Villines wrote. He noted Still volunteers outside the school and participates in sports. “Camille commits 100% of her efforts to what she does and is loved by all of her teachers and peers,” Villines wrote.
