Vice President Kamala Harris makes stop in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Vice President Kamala Harris made a stop in Las Vegas on Monday. It’s her fourth visit to the state this year and twelfth since being sworn in as the first female vice president of the United States.

During a White House event, Vice President Harris held a moderated town hall about the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act that passed in 2022. The act expanded mental health services and expanded background checks on gun sellers and buyers under 21.

She also talked about visiting with UNLV students who were present during the shooting on campus in early December of last year and what she believes can be done to help reduce gun violence.

“I’m in favor of the second amendment and I believe we need an assault weapons bans, we need universal background checks, we need red flag laws,” she said during her speech.

At a second event, hosted by the Biden for President campaign, Harris also promoted a Nevada ballot measure that would ensure abortion access in the state constitution. If enough signatures are gathered – Nevadans will get to vote on the issue in November’s general election.

She put forward her case for voters on how her campaign would fight for women’s right to get an abortion. She blamed former Republican President Donald Trump for the recent Arizona Supreme Court decision that upholds a near-total ban on abortion from an 1864 law.

“Freedom is fundamental to the promise of America… We know that the strength of our nation has been a function of many things, including our commitment to the expansion of rights, but for the first time in a very long time, we are seeing a full-on intent to restrict rights, to take rights.,” Vice President Kamala Harris said. “Let’s be clear: There is a direct track between what we have seen in states like Arizona, what the people of Nevada are fighting for and who the previous president was. Let’s not forget, Donald Trump made clear his intention to select three members of the United States Supreme Court so that they would overturn the protections of Roe v Wade…. What we are seeing in these states that we are talking about are Trump abortion bans.”

The vice president returned to Los Angeles on Monday night.
