Van Wieren Hardware near Holland closing after seven decades

HOLLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A hardware store in the Holland area is closing after more than seven decades.

Van Wieren Hardware announced Saturday it would be closing because the third-generation owners are ready to retire. The store opened at 645 Douglas Ave. near the intersection of Ottawa Beach Road and Division Avenue in 1948, the family shared on social media, first serving as a combination gas station, lunchroom and bait shop.

“Our family is overwhelmed by the love and support we have received from our local community throughout those decades,” they shared. “Our customers have become part of our family, and we are beyond grateful for just as many generations of loyal supporters.”

They said it has been a joy to help customers with everything from home improvement projects to learning how to slingshot a flying monkey toy.

The store’s employees were the heart of its success, the family said.

“We are eternally grateful for the amazing times, countless memories, and unwavering dedication,” the family wrote. “We would not have made it this far without your continued support and are forever thankful for your role in this journey!”

The store was closed Monday as it prepares for a liquidation sale starting Tuesday. Van Wieren Hardware will be offering up to 50% off everything as part of the sale.

“This is not a goodbye but rather a ‘see you later’ as our entire family continues to live in and support the Holland community. Many are excited to embark on a long over due retirement and we all certainly look forward to seeing you around town,” they wrote.
