USS Midway Museum opens new exhibit in honor of Navy engineers

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) — One of the most popular military museums in America is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. To mark the significant milestone, the USS Midway Museum is opening a new exhibit honoring sailors whose stories were left largely untold.

“Midway’s Engineers: Service, Sacrifice and Everyday Life” is an immersive experience. The nine galleries combine audio and video elements to bring guests back in time to take a look at the grueling jobs of Navy engineers.

“Pilots get a lot of glory, these engineers are really behind-the-scenes heroes,” said Christine Murray, the creative director at Art Processors who helped with the exhibit.

“They were in charge of the electric, they were in charge of the plumbing, they were in charge of the steam which actually powered the ship through the water and also made all of the electricity that made every single system in the Midway work,” Murray said.

They did crucial work with little time to decompress.

“Work, sleep, eat, ’round the clock,” Murray added.

The new exhibit also includes equipment and personal items on display, showing what was commonly used by sailors who served on the vessel.

The design team says this is the museum’s greatest tribute to the Navy’s hard-working engineers.

The new exhibit opens to the public on Saturday ahead of Memorial Day.
