USA Health partners with Andalusia Health to offer obstetrics to south-central Alabama

MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — USA Health’s family medicine obstetrics fellowship has partnered with Andalusia Health to provide care to patients and allow physicians early in their careers to gain more experience, according to a news release from USA Health.

Patients in Covington County will be able to seek care now after the Monroe County Hospital labor and delivery unit closed in November 2023.

The fellowship is a one-year program that will provide care to residents in rural Alabama where there is little to no prenatal care available, according to the release.

“Rural settings require physicians to be able to take care of a wide range of patients, typically having fewer sub-specialists to work with and refer patients to,” said Vickie Demers, BS, MBA, MHA, CPPS, chief executive officer of Andalusia Health. “This program trains physicians to take care of all ages of patients – from newborns through geriatrics – and we’re glad to be able to assist in preparing the future generation of doctors.”

The program offers trainees a “tailored and comprehensive educational experience,” according to the release. Two fellows will be accepted each year from nationally accredited family medicine residency programs.

The fellows will work with local providers at Andalusia Health in the clinic and in the obstetrics department of the hospital.
