Metropolitan Luke of the Zaporizhzhya Diocese of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) was placed under nightly house arrest for two months by the Kyiv’s Solomyanskyi District Court, following suspicion of inciting religious hatred, the Graty publication reported on May 7.

The court ruling requires Luke (Andriy Kovalenko) to be at home from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. every night.

On May 1, he was notified of suspicion under Part 2 of Article 161 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (violation of the equality of citizens depending on their race, nationality, region, religious beliefs and other grounds).

The investigation alleges that Metropolitan Luke expressed disdain for parishioners of other faiths during private conversations and church liturgies. He also posted provocative content on his personal Telegram channel, insulting the religious sentiments of people of other faiths.

The aim was to undermine the socio-political situation in the frontline Ukrainian region if favor of the Russian invaders.
