CONWAY, Ark. – An Arkansas basketball program is getting a new head coach and the Natural State is gaining a new family.

University of Central Arkansas director of athletics Brad Teague announced Monday that John Shulman is the new head coach of men’s basketball. Teague said Shulman was the top choice after the university heard from a significant number of applicants.

“We interviewed and vetted many candidates,” Teague said. “John Shulman rose to the top due to his many years of head coaching experience at the Division I and Division II levels, coupled with his infectious energy and enthusiasm.”

Shulman is looking forward to joining the Bears and coming to Conway.

“Everything is about the right fit and it fits us perfectly,” Shulman said. “We are so excited to hit the ground running and bring a fun and winning style to Conway.”

Shulman said he would work hard.

“I promise that we will work tirelessly to bring a winning tradition to UCA on the basketball court,” the coach said. “I am so proud to be part of the university and will lean on the other coaches to learn the UCA way as their success on and off the court and field are very impressive.”

Shulman joins the UCA Bears with an established career as a collegiate head coach, most recently at the University of Alabama-Huntsville and previously at Chattanooga. Shulman was an assistant at Wofford, Tennessee Tech, and East Tennessee State prior to head coaching duties.

He is also looking forward to life in Conway.

“We look forward to not only being your basketball coach but also a great neighbor and an active participant in the Conway community,” Shulman said.
