Unclear whether sanctions will be enough to stop Iran-Israel conflict

Host Jim Niedelman takes a look at the volatility in the Middle East with returning panelists former Rock Island County Republican Party Chair Drue Mielke and former Rock Island Mayor Mark Schwiebert, a Democrat.

That tension between Israel and Iran doesn’t seem to be waning. Iran’s drone and missile attack on Israel last week failed after Israel, the United States and other countries intercepted most of them and prevented any significant damage.

Iran has signaled it’s done after retaliating for a deadly attack on its embassy compound in Syria.

Israel says it’s figuring out how it will respond, and all signs seem to point to it responding, despite pressure not to from the United States.

Israel is dealing with its war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Iran supports Hamas and other terrorist groups in the region like Hezbollah. So when Iran says it’s done, it’s really not done.

We keep hearing the Biden Administration say they don’t want to see the region escalate into a wider war, and it only keeps escalating.

“President Biden and the European Union are taking a very responsible attitude – they’re talking about increasing the sections on Iran, taking away their capability for producing the kinds of drones and missiles they’ve been firing,” Schwiebert said.

“Anything the Untied States can do to curtail or limit this expansion of war is obviously something we should be doing,” Mielke said. “However, Israel is going to do whatever it needs to survive.”
