LCSO releases details, identifies man killed in Florence police shooting

FLORENCE, Ala. (WHNT) — The Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) has identified the man who died after an officer-involved shooting in Florence on Monday.

Florence Police Chief Ron Tyler said one of their officers was involved during a news conference on Monday afternoon.

31-year-old Scottsboro man killed in Sunday shooting

Lauderdale County Sheriff Joe Hamilton identified the person as 42-year-old Bart James Barcelou.

Tyler said officers responded to the 200 block of North Walnut Street to attempt to serve warrants to Barcelou, who had active warrants from Kane County, Utah for 3 counts of first-degree felony rape and one count of third-degree felony dealing in harmful materials to a minor by an adult.

Hamilton clarified that Florence Police were attempting to serve a felony out-of-state warrant for rape at that time. The sheriff said the person had two knives in his hands during the incident.

He said officers attempted to use a “less lethal taser option” during the incident.

Hamilton said that body cam footage of the incident does exist

The call of shots fired came at 10:52 a.m.

“Ultimately and unfortunately, the encounter resulted in a very violent end that involved shots fired from one of our police officers,” Tyler stated.

Tyler added that the LCSO is investigating, and the officer involved will be placed on leave pending the outcome of the investigation. The findings of the investigation will be given to the Lauderdale County District Attorney’s Office.

All FPD officers present at the scene are okay, Tyler said.
