An Algiers family is now having to pack up and find a new place to live after a car crashed into their home Wednesday night.

“My grandkids ran outside they were screaming and hollering for me to come outside it started smoking and it started sparking,” said tenant Darnell Esteem.

Esteem was putting her grandkids to bed before heading off to work when she heard a car, followed by the sound of shattered glass.

“I told my grandkids and my daughter to run, but they were running toward the back of the house, I said no run outside I smelled smoke and the car just kept on coming. It didn’t stop until it got right there,” said Esteem.

She says a neighbor backing out of their driveway across the street lost control when their brakes went out.

The front of the home is destroyed, but Esteem says the health of her grandkids was her only concern.

“They are in pain, they are still at the hospital and haven’t been released yet. They are still running tests and checking them out because I told them to do another check because it was so sudden and scary,” said Esteem.

As she looked over the destruction, she admitted it was tough to see.

“I’ve been here eight months, it’s just now I have to move again, which is a hassle. It’s expensive, I just started back working. It’s a hassle. Thank god we are here to tell the story. I hope and pray it never happens again,” said Esteem.

The driver walked away with no injuries but was issued three citations by police.
