Run for Home events next weekend

DOVER − The 17th annual Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital Run for Home will be Saturday and April 7 in New Philadelphia and Dover. All proceeds will benefit Habitat for Humanity East Central Ohio building projects in Tuscarawas County.

All activities are headquartered at Tuscora Park in New Philadelphia starting at 8 a.m. Saturday, when the doors open at the park dining hall for registration and packet pickup. The first event is a free kids’ run at 9 a.m., with activities along the route centered around the solar eclipse coming up April 8. The kids’ run is followed by a one-mile fun run, and 5K and 10K races. Other activities include face painting and a photo booth.

On April 7, the half-marathon and team relay begin at 7 a.m. The route will take participants from Tuscora Park to Dover City Park and finish on the track inside Woody Hayes Quaker Stadium. After the race, Hoodletown Brewing will host a post-race party.

Ukulele Squad to perform at senior center

DOVER − To kick off the Dover Library Lunch & Learn, the T-County Ukulele Squad will play at 12:15 p.m. Wednesday at the Tuscarawas County Senior Center.

“We will bring extra ukuleles,” said group facilitator Paula Hostetler, “for people who want to try their hand at playing this fun instrument. Full audience participation is expected. Be prepared to sing along.”

Learn about safe medication practices

DOVER − Pharmacist Jeff Neidig, owner/president of Medi-Wise Pharmacy, will be at the Dover Public Library at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday to present Generation Rx: Safe Medication Practices for Life. Clue game night set at museum

DOVER − The Reeves Museum, 325 E. Iron Ave., will host a Clue game night from 7 to 9 p.m. April 13. You’ll meet characters throughout the Reeves mansion and search for clues to solve the murder.

Learn about natural burials

DOVER − Hanna Mann, associate director of Foxfield Preserve, will lead a discussion at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Dover Public Library on “ natural burial. Register for the program at www.doverlibrary.org/events or call 330-343-6123.

Foxfield Preserve, at the Stark County Wilderness Center in Wilmot, was opened in 2008. It is the first natural burial ground in Ohio and the first in the country to be operated by a conservation organization. These natural burial alternatives preserve lands and generate sustainable funding for crucial conservation and educational initiatives at The Wilderness Center.

Local students’ artwork on display

NEW PHILADELPHIA − Ninety-one artworks from local high school students were selected for the Region 10 Ohio Governor’s Youth Art Exhibition. The exhibition is open to all of Ohio's 1,112 high schools, both public and private, chartered by the State of Ohio Department of Education.

This included one piece from Claymont High School, 11 pieces from Dover High School, 25 pieces from Indian Valley High School and five pieces from New Philadelphia High School.

Selected Region 10 works will be featured in an art show at the Tuscarawas County Center for the Arts through April 9. A closing reception will be at 6 p.m. April 9. Gallery hours for the Tuscarawas County Center for the Arts, 461 Robinson Drive SE, are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday and noon to 3:30 p.m. Saturdays.

The region 10 competition was held virtually statewide the first weekend of March in the state’s 15 regions. In the Eastern region (Region 10), which includes schools in Carroll, Coshocton, Stark and Tuscarawas counties, 466 entries were submitted. Jurors for the 2024 Region 10 competition were Zac Pirillo, Aubrey Gealsha and Jane Crowther.

Tuscarawas County art educators with regional selected works are Carrie Kunkle from Claymont, Samantha Hanenkrat, Wendy Mohn and Keri Stratton from Dover, Sara Dittfeld from Indian Valley, and Heather Agar from New Philadelphia. The Region 10 Ohio Governor’s Youth Art Exhibition director is Sara Dittfeld.

Tusc Republican Party Central Committee to meet

NEW PHILADELPHIA − The Tuscarawas County Republican Party Central Committee will hold its organizational meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Tuscarawas Republican Party Headquarters, 1053 state Route 39 NW. Foundation to host gala fundraiser

SUGARCREEK − The Indian Valley Foundation will host its sixth annual Spring Gala from 4:30 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Harvest Barn, 420 Dutch Valley Drive NE. Tickets are $50 and there will be a cash bar.

The event will include a cocktail hour with hors d’ oeuvres, a dinner prepared by Log Cabin Catering, a live auction, a silent auction, a wine pull and gift card pull. All proceeds will benefit the Indian Valley School District and IV students attending Buckeye Career Center to support scholarships, as well as teacher classroom grants, and school buildings grants not funded by traditional sources.

Church dinner is Saturday

SUGARCREEK − Ragersville Zion United Church of Christ, 8831 Crooked Run Rd SW, will host its spring dinner from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday. The meal includes ham, Swiss steak, mashed potatoes, noodles, green beans, salad, dessert and a beverage. Carryout will be available. Cost is by donation.

Retirement community earns recognitions

WALNUT HILLS − Walnut Hills Retirement Community, 4748 Olde Pump St., has been recognized as an America’s Best Continuing Care Retirement Community by Newsweek and as a Best Nursing Home by U.S. News & World Report.

The Newsweek ranking was based on national surveys of medical professionals and acquaintances of residents living in CCRCs and accreditation data. Walnut Hills was ranked 19th on the Ohio list of Best CCRCs and was in the top 250 in the United States.

Walnut Hills received a high performing rating in both short-term rehabilitation and long-term care. These ratings were based on data on resident care, safety, outcomes, nurse staffing, and success in preventing emergency room and hospital visits.

Zoar Village opens Saturday

ZOAR – Historic Zoar Village opens for the season Saturday and features a new art exhibit Scene Around Zoar in the Bimeler Museum. The exhibit presents art from the 1880s to the 1940s showcasing the scenery of Zoar Village. The display runs through Oct. 27.

Opening day also marks the unveiling of village’s Best of Zoar exhibit in the Town Hall, featuring popular artifacts and a brief recapping of Zoar’s history. A tree dedication ceremony will be at 12:30 p.m. Saturday to celebrate the new tree replacing the Tree of Everlasting Life. The original tree was severely damaged in a windstorm in March 2023.

Noel Poirier will kick off the free speaker series with a discussion at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Schoolhouse on how to research historic homes. Poirier is the executive director of the Ohio Genealogical Society and has worked with many families to uncover the history of their house on his website The Lazy Family Historian.

The American Red Cross has scheduled a blood-donation drive from noon to 6 p.m. Monday at Zion United Church of Christ, 203 N. Butler St., Baltic.
