Transportation service helps residents of St. Landry Parish

ST. LANDRY PARISH, La. (KLFY) — St. Landry Parish’s Community Action Agency is setting the goal to assist anyone in the parish that struggles with getting to a destination thanks to their free transportation service.

Community Action Agency Executive Director Charisse Roberts says the free transit program continues to see growth each year since the pandemic, with an over 60% increase in riders from 2020 to 2024, leading to the addition of 2 more buses bringing their total to 6.

“We travel anywhere around St. Landry Parish, we can go as far as Lafayette; we can go to Ville Platte if that ride permits,” Roberts explained. “We get about 300 rides per month, roughly. Hopefully with Medicaid starting over, you know, we can get more rides in.”

With Medicaid policy holders now being able to request the service, Robets says the program can help with just about any transportation needs.

“We do offer Medicaid and cash fares. We can go to doctor’s office. We can go to the store. We go in just about anywhere you need to, if the hours permit.”

In a time of inflation, and no end to the rising costs in sight, Roberts says Community Action will continue to do as much as they can to help people get where they need to go.

“It’s a big need. Cars are expensive these days, a lot of people don’t have transportation. With not having any public transportation, you know we are here to assist with that need of getting that person from point A to point B,” said Roberts.

Anyone that would like to request a ride can call this number, or they can visit the agency directly at 1065 Highway 749 in Opelousas.
