Tower District’s plan is 33-years-old: How you can help Fresno make a new one

FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – The plan for how Fresno’s Tower District should develop as an area is 33 years old – and Fresno is now working on making a new one for the 21st century.

“All cities in California must have general plans that govern how that city is going to grow over the next 20 years,” said Planning Manager Sophia Pagoulatos.

Pagoulatos says cities can elect specific plans, just like the one for the Tower District, adopted in 1991. The Tower District Specific Plan laid out how the Tower District would grow.

In early 2022, the City of Fresno allocated funds to update the 31-year-old plan. This led to Fresno City Council creating a committee of Tower residents. That committee was tasked with finding out what matters most to everyone in the Tower District and how they feel the plan should be updated.

“Where we are right now is we’ve done a series of workshops and pop-up events and gathered a lot of community input,” said Pagoulatos.

The committee is reaching out to the public for their opinion – before the next step of policy development and land use.

“Those who have a stake or a vested interest in what happens in the footprint of the Tower District are definitely encouraged to participate in this process because that’s what the community uses to make recommendations to the council,” said Director of Planning and Development for the City of Fresno Jennifer Clark.

The next committee meeting is on Tuesday April 16, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and residents can participate over Zoom (click here for the link). Residents can also attend the meeting in person and the location will be posted on the City of Fresno’s Tower Hub.

More information on what’s happening with the Tower District Specific Plan can also be found on the City of Fresno’s Tower Hub.
