A tow truck driver died after he was hit on a state highway in Texas by a motorist who fell asleep at the wheel, according to police.
The Grapevine Police Department said officers responded to the crash in the 2000 block of North SH-121 just before midnight on Tuesday, April 16.
Upon arrival, officers found the tow truck driver on the roadway about 30 feet from his truck “with major injuries,” according to a news release from the GPD.
The officers “rendered medical aid until paramedics arrived,” at which time the man “was transported to the hospital.”
Police said the victim was initially “expected to survive.” However, hospital staff contacted the GPD on Wednesday, April 17, and informed them “that the crash victim died from internal injuries.”

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the tow truck driver as 27-year-old Mohammad Abu Rub, according to public records viewed by PEOPLE. Rub died at the hospital of blunt force injuries, and his death was ruled an accident.
While at the scene of Saturday’s crash, police spoke with a man who “identified himself as the driver of the work truck that hit the victim,” according to the GPD.

The individual, who was not injured, claimed to have fallen asleep at the wheel and only woke up when he felt the impact of the crash.
Police said the tow truck involved in the crash appeared to have rear-end damage.
An investigation into the crash is ongoing. Amanda McNew, a spokesperson for the GPD, tells PEOPLE that an arrest “has not yet been made” in connection with the crash.
“But this is an active case, meaning an arrest could happen in the future,” McNew adds.

In the meantime, police are reminding the public that “extreme fatigue and drowsiness can be just as dangerous for drivers as intoxication.”
Police added, "If you or a loved one are too tired to drive, please pull over or seek another ride."
