Topekans invited to open house on future of Kansas River

TOPEKA (KSNT) – A Topeka group focused on developing the riverfront is inviting locals to a public engagement session later this month to talk about the future of the Kansas River.

The Topeka Riverfront Advisory Council (RAC) is hosting a Topeka Riverfront Plan Open House from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 21 at the Great Overland Station located at 701 N. Kansas Avenue. This session will include a short presentation at 6:30 p.m. and opportunities to give feedback on concept designs.

“The May 21st open house is another step forward in our journey to reimagine Topeka’s riverfront property,” said Greg Schwerdt, RAC chair. “I hope community members turn out to make their voices heard, as we hone in on the concepts and ideas that will be most needed and beneficial in Topeka and Shawnee County.”

The RAC launched a survey late last year to gather Topekan’s thoughts and opinions on what they want from the riverfront. The results of the survey showed most people want increased safety along the riverfront and to transform the area for recreational use.

“We appreciate everyone who took our riverfront survey around the start of the year, and we look forward to hearing more great perspectives in person this month,” said Ashley Gilfillan, director of river strategies for the Greater Topeka Partnership. “Public input is crucial in determining how Topeka’s riverfront should be transformed, and we’re committed to taking community members’ ideas into account when drafting the final Riverfront Activation Plan later this year.”
