For 30 years, the annual J.D. Power Initial Quality StudySM (IQS) has measured owner satisfaction with new car quality during the first 90 days of ownership. The study measures more than 200 individual vehicle parameters and the 2017 IQS tabulates responses from nearly 80,000 verified new-vehicle owners.
This year, a total of 23 car, truck, SUV, and van models receive an award for initial quality. Displayed in alphabetical order by make and model on the pages that follow, these are the top-ranked cars, trucks, SUVs, and vans in their respective segments.2017 BMW 2 Series
In the Small Premium Car segment, the BMW 2 Series ranks highest in initial quality in 2017. New engines debuted this year, resulting in name changes to 230i and M240i. The 8-speed automatic transmission and suspension received updates, new standard wheel choices arrived, and BMW offered wireless device charging, a Wi-Fi connection, and an upgraded Park Distance Control system.
2017 BMW 4 Series
In the Compact Premium Car segment, the BMW 4 Series is the top-ranked model in initial quality in 2017. New engines arrived for 2017, changing names to 430i and 440i. Wireless device charging and a Wi-Fi hotspot became available, and BMW installed a next-generation iDrive infotainment system. An adaptive damping suspension became standard for the M4.
2017 BMW X6
In the Midsize Premium SUV segment, the BMW X6 ranks highest in initial quality in 2017. BMW kept changes to the X6 to a minimum this year, adding a next-generation iDrive infotainment system with touch-screen technology and offering both wireless device charging and a Wi-Fi hotspot connection.
2017 Chevrolet Silverado Heavy Duty
In the Large Heavy Duty Pickup segment, the Chevrolet Silverado HD is the top-ranked model in initial quality in 2017. A new Duramax 6.6-liter, turbodiesel V-8 engine debuted this year, and Chevrolet offered Teen Driver safety technology and a digital steering system for the first time.
2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
In the Large Light Duty Pickup segment, the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is the top-ranked model in initial quality in 2017. A capless fuel-filler system came standard, along with Teen Driver safety technology. Low-speed automatic emergency braking was available for 2017, and Chevrolet increased maximum towing capacity to 12,500 lbs. for specific versions of the truck.
2017 Chevrolet Sonic
In the Small Car segment, the Chevrolet Sonic is the top-ranked model in initial quality in 2017. Freshened styling arrived this year, along with a standard MyLink infotainment system with a reversing camera and smartphone-projection capability. New options included rear park-assist sensors, keyless entry and engine starting, heated steering wheel, and heated cloth seats.
2017 Chrysler Pacifica
In the Minivan segment, the Chrysler Pacifica ranks highest in initial quality in 2017. New for 2017, the Pacifica offered a range of trim levels and equipment combined with a 3.6-liter V-6 engine and a 9-speed automatic transmission. A plug-in hybrid model went on sale after the 2017 IQS was fielded.
2017 Ford Expedition
In the Large SUV segment, the Ford Expedition is the top-ranked model in initial quality in 2017. Ford made no changes to the 2017 Expedition aside from a new Limited Appearance package. The Expedition is completely redesigned for the 2018 model year.
2017 Ford Mustang
In the Midsize Sporty Car segment, the Ford Mustang is the top-ranked model in initial quality in 2017. New paint colors were the only changes this year, as the Mustang is getting a significant refresh for the 2018 model year.
2017 GMC Terrain
In the Compact SUV segment, the GMC Terrain ranks highest in initial quality in 2017. A trendy Nightfall Edition version of the Terrain arrived for 2017, featuring blacked-out trim for a sporty look. The Terrain is completely redesigned for the 2018 model year.
2017 Infiniti QX80
In the Large Premium SUV segment, the Infiniti QX80 is the top-ranked model in initial quality in 2017. This year, standard equipment included trailer sway control, and the optional Driver’s Assistance package added an automatic emergency braking system with pedestrian-detection technology. A limited-production Signature Edition also debuted.
2017 Kia Cadenza
In the Large Car segment, the Kia Cadenza is the top-ranked model in initial quality in 2017. Kia completely redesigned the Cadenza this year, improving the car in every way. Trim packages include Premium, Technology, and Limited, all powered by a 3.3-liter V-6 engine and a new 8-speed automatic transmission.
2017 Kia Forte
In the Compact Car segment, the Kia Forte is the top-ranked model in initial quality in 2017. Freshened styling, a new base engine, new dual-clutch transmission for Forte5 hatchbacks, sporty new Forte S sedan trim level, and enhanced infotainment and safety technologies accompanied this Kia into 2017. Kia also discontinued the 2-door Koup model.
2017 Kia Niro
In the Small SUV segment, the Kia Niro ranks highest in initial quality in 2017. Though unavailable with all-wheel drive, the Niro does offer more ground clearance than a typical car. Plus, it comes only with an efficient hybrid powertrain that is rated to get as much as 50 mpg in combined driving.
2017 Kia Sorento
In the Midsize SUV segment, the Kia Sorento is the top-ranked model in initial quality in 2017. This year, Kia enhanced the Sorento with smartphone-projection technology and a newly available automatic emergency braking system. Headlights that help the driver to see around dark corners also debuted for 2017.
2017 Kia Soul
In the Compact Multi-Purpose Vehicle segment, the Kia Soul is the top-ranked model in initial quality in 2017. This year, the Soul received a power infusion in the form of a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, while the electric Soul EV gained DC Fast Charge capability. New safety and infotainment technologies also arrived for 2017.
2017 Lexus GS
In the Midsize Premium Car segment, the Lexus GS is the top-ranked model in initial quality in 2017. This year, Lexus made key driver-assistance and collision-avoidance technologies standard equipment and installed standard performance upgrades on the GS 350 F Sport and GS F models.
2017 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class
In the Small Premium SUV segment, the Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class is the top-ranked model in initial quality in 2017. Smartphone-projection technology debuted as an option this year, and Mercedes made minor changes to the interior in order to improve the cabin’s look and feel.
2017 Mini Cooper
In the Compact Sporty Car segment, the Mini Cooper is the top-ranked model in initial quality in 2017. Aside from adding a bit more standard equipment, the Cooper convertible and hatch models carried over from the previous year, continuing to offer a wide range of paint colors, wheel choices, interior trims, and options.
2017 Nissan Frontier
In the Midsize Pickup segment, the Nissan Frontier ranks highest in initial quality in 2017. In production for more than a decade with very few changes made over that span of time, the 2017 Frontier included updates designed to make this pickup more appealing to entry-level buyers.
2017 Porsche 911
In the Midsize Premium Sporty Car category, the Porsche 911 is the top-ranked model in initial quality in 2017. This year, Porsche introduced new engines with more power and efficiency, an upgraded infotainment system, and mildly updated styling.
2017 Porsche Macan
In the Compact Premium SUV category, the Porsche Macan is the top-ranked model in initial quality in 2017. A less expensive version with a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine debuted this year, and Porsche improved the Macan’s infotainment system.
2017 Toyota Camry
In the Midsize Car segment, the Toyota Camry is the top-ranked model in initial quality in 2017. In its final year before a complete redesign, the Camry’s upper trim levels gained added standard equipment in the form of a premium sound system, connected navigation, and wireless device charging capability.
