Today, we launch Fresno’s Restaurant Royalty, our deep look at eight founding families

Starting today, restaurant and food reporter Bethany Clough gives readers the first two installments of her deep look into the histories of Fresno’s eight major restaurant families and their rise to prominence on the prepared food scene.

After my family moved to Fresno last summer, we quickly discovered an intricate network of homegrown restaurants with loyal followings and unique offerings. We also discovered high quality and diverse food trucks as part of Fresno’s hip and unrivaled dining scene, bolstered by some of the freshest produce you can find anywhere.

What I heard from waiters, bartenders and floor managers were recurring family names behind these establishments. Each has staked out their own spot on Fresno’s lunch and dinner menus and created unique brands. If you’ve dined at an independent Fresno restaurant, it’s likely one of these families provided the meal.

They are Fresno’s Restaurant Royalty.

This four-day series is part of our ongoing commitment to deliver deep local news and information that reflects what Fresnans really care about. We’ve been listening to you, and this series is the type of local story-telling you’ve been seeking.

Today, you can read about the Toledo and DiCicco families, and in succeeding days we’ll give you the stories behind more families and the histories behind their restaurant brands.

We hope you enjoy this special series, and look for more to come in the future.
