Terrytown driver accused of impairment arrested after fatal Harvey crash

HARVEY, La. (WGNO) — A Terrytown man accused of driving while impaired was arrested following a fatal crash in Harvey on Tuesday, April 30.

The Louisiana State Police reported troopers responded to a crash on U.S. 90B at Scotsdale Drive around 7 p.m.

They said an initial investigation shows 23-year-old Michael Barahona was driving a motorcycle east on U.S. 90B lower level when a GMC driven by 67-year-old John Semien allegedly drove through a stop sign and into the intersection.

The motorcycle then hit the passenger side of the GMC.

LSP officials said Barahona suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene despite wearing the proper helmet.

They said Semien allegedly tried to run away from the scene before he was apprehended by LSP troopers and Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies.

According to the LSP, “During the on-scene investigation, Semien exhibited signs of impairment.”

Semien was arrested and faces charges of vehicular homicide, hit-and-run driving and disregarding a stop sign.

LSP officials said the investigation is ongoing.
