Students explore options at Selinsgrove Area School District career fair

Apr. 5—SUNBURY — More than 700 Selinsgrove High School students now have several different careers to consider after the district hosted its second annual Career Fair Friday.

Rebecca Schaffer-Neitz, the district's sixth-through-12th-grade career readiness counselor, said the goal was to let students know they have options.

"What we were doing was bringing in different jobs, local employers and places where students can go to get continued help for careers or education," she said. "We had 30 different booths for students."

Schaffer-Neitz said the day was made up of clusters of various jobs.

"We set this up with different career clusters in mind," she said. "We introduced construction, manufacturing, human services and students were told to get resumes ready as we introduced them to the multiple clusters to help them find out where they want to be."

She said more than 700 students were given the opportunity to meet with potential employers.

"At a minimum, we hope the students see there are options for their future," she said.

Sophomore Anthony Snook, 16, said he enjoyed the day of meeting with people.

"I wanted to find something in athletics or in athletic training," he said. "I am thinking of college and I think this type of event is good because a lot of schools don't get this opportunity."

Classmate Taylor Fry, 15 agreed.

"I am looking at the medical field area," she said. "It was really helpful today and it opened our eyes to see the places we can go."

Fry said it was also nice to meet with people.

"It was so helpful for people who don't know what they want to do," she said.

Schaffer-Neitz said it was a great day for students.

"For the younger students, this is an opportunity to learn more about the world of work in our community and start to develop ideas of where they would like to go professionally," she said. "Additionally, many of our employers were looking for summer and part-time workers. Students were encouraged to grab an application or to use their phones to follow a QR code to apply. We plan to continue to offer a career fair each spring so that all students get this opportunity."
