Students call for an end to gun violence after ‘senior skip day’ shooting in Greenbelt

GREENBELT, Md. (DC News Now) — Students returned to school in Prince George’s County Monday after a shooting at a Greenbelt “senior skip day” event left five students injured on Friday. Police were still searching for the responsible suspect.

A total of five teens were shot, three of whom were released from the hospital over the weekend and two of whom are still recovering.

It happened at Schrom Hills Park in Greenbelt, where hundreds of high school students from across the county had gathered together to have a water balloon fight.

Someone opened fire during this event, hitting the five teens. The victims are between the ages of 16 and 18.

Charles Walk, a senior at Eleanor Roosevelt High School, said he overslept that day and missed the event. When he watched several videos on social media, he said it looked like everyone was having a good time, so he was surprised when he found out a shooting happened.

“It’s crazy, they need to put the guns down,” he said.

The search continued for the suspect on Monday. Greenbelt police and Prince George’s County police are asking anyone with video footage or information to come forward.
