Strictly's Dan Walker responds to fan backlash over "unconventional" footwear

Strictly Come Dancing star Dan Walker has responded to a backlash over some "unconventional" footwear he wore on TV.

The star was presenting on 5 News this week sporting trainers alongside a suit, which left one viewer questioning whether "standards [had] gone".

Taking to Twitter/X, the follower wrote: "Channel 5 News Hour tonight I love watching Dan present this News Programme but today from 5.00pm I looked down at his feet.

"A National News Programme and he’s Wearing Trainers. For a Minute I hold my Breath I know it’s not @BBCNews but have standards gone?"

However, Dan expertly replied to the post, arguing that his trainers were "smart" while also recalling an amusing incident when he was on BBC Breakfast.

"Thanks for watching David," the presenter wrote. "I love the shoes. I know they are ‘unconventional’ but I do think they are ‘smart’. I did once wear golf shoes on BBC Breakfast because I got dressed in the dark @5_News."

Meanwhile, last month Dan revealed a new venture away from TV, confirming he was now part-owner of a café in Sheffield.

"You know I go on about cake a lot?" he wrote on X. "Well… I am officially now the part-owner of a cafe!!!

"It’s something my wife and I have been thinking about for a while and an opportunity came up just down the road from our house in Sheffield at a place we love, right at the heart of the community, and with friends who are brilliant."

He added: "So… feel free to pop along to the Brook Coffee Rooms in Fulwood in Sheffield… I’ll be the one in the corner eating a cronut. It is officially… THE DREAM."

Earlier this year, Dan also joined Classic FM as the new host of their breakfast show.
