Staunton man shot at Howard Johnson dies. Staunton Police identify victim, suspect.

STAUNTON — Police have identified both the victim of a Friday morning shooting as well as the suspect who is in custody.

According to Staunton Police, Jonathan Michael Jacobs, 39, of Staunton died at the scene in a shooting at the Howard Johnson Motel at 268 N. Central Ave. in Staunton Friday. Police received a 911 call reporting the shooting at approximately 9:55 a.m., per a press release.

The suspect, identified by police in a release late Friday afternoon, is Rodney Dwayne Phillips, 35, of Staunton. Police said he fled the scene before eventually being located and taken into custody at approximately 10:55 a.m.

Police have charged Phillips with second degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. He is being held without bond at Middle River Regional Jail, according to police. The investigation remains ongoing.
