Augusta County School Board approves new Riverheads Middle School principal

VERONA — Adam Mulcahy was named new principal of Riverheads Middle School Thursday night. The Augusta County School Board approved Mulcahy for the position at its monthly meeting.

Mulcahy is currently assistant principal and athletic director at Riverheads High School.

The school is currently under construction and is scheduled to open for the 2024-25 school year. It is being built as an addition to Riverheads High School

"I appreciate all the support and am very excited to be named principal of the new Riverheads Middle School," Mulcahy told The News Leader Thursday. "This has been talked about in our community most of my life and I am truly honored to be able to help bring that vision to a reality for all our families."

Mulcahy began his career in education at Western Albemarle High School as a science teacher. In 2022 he moved to Riverheads High School, replacing Tim Morris as athletic director. Mulcahy is a graduate of Riverheads and was part of the 2000 football state champions. He also earned his bachelors degree from Bridgewater College and his master's from Averett University.

"Mr. Mulcahy is a thoughtful and reflective leader," said Kelly Troxell, the school division's director of personnel. "He is student centered, community minded and strives to serve the best interests of students both in and out of the classroom."

Troxell said Mulcahy understands the commitment and enthusiasm needed to open a new school.

"(He) will work with all stakeholders to make it a place where students are excited to be and where families and community members feel welcome," Troxell said.

Technically, Mulcahy is the second principal of the not-yet-opened Riverheads Middle School. In May, 2023, former Stewart Middle School principal Michael Conner was named principal. He moved to Beverley Manor Middle this school year as associate principal, working with students who, after this year, will begin attending both Riverheads and Buffalo Gap middle schools.

Conner decided to retire from Augusta County Public Schools after first semester, leaving the position at Riverheads Middle vacant.

Riverheads High School will now need to fill its assistant principal and athletic director position.
