Stand-off with law enforcement shuts down U.S. 50

OLATHE, Colo. (KREX) — In the late morning hours on Monday, April 22, Colorado State Patrol assisted the Montrose Sheriffs Department and Olathe Police in shutting down U.S. Highway 50 in both directions after a shooting suspect barricaded themselves in a home near the highway.

Cars on U.S. 50 were rerouted to nearby frontage roads.

According to the Montrose County Undersheriff George Jackson, the suspect shot at someone Sunday, April 21 but didn’t hit anyone. Around 11 a.m. the next day deputies determined the suspect was armed and barricaded inside a home near Gunnison Road. To protect the public, Jackson said law enforcement blocked off both sides of the highway and rerouted traffic. Deputies attempted to negotiate with the suspect throughout the day but the suspect did not respond.

Around 5:05 p.m. Jackson confirmed to WesternSlopeNow that the suspect had been taken into custody without incident and U.S. 50 was expected to open up soon after.

Colorado State Patrol provided traffic control near the scene.
