Spring is here, and so are allergies, forcing many Wichitans to stay inside

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – With warmer weather, trees and plants are starting to bloom, bringing allergy season to many people in Wichita. This allergy season is already making it tough for people to go outdoors.

For the second year in a row, according to the Asthma Allergy Foundation of America, Wichita is the worst city in the country for people who have severe allergies.

“I can’t go outside because I’m so congested, my eyes run, and my nose is steadily running, and it bothers me a whole lot,” said Linda Parker, who suffers from allergies.

This time of year entices people to be outside because of the beautiful weather, but the allergens and pollen in the air shut down the excitement for outdoor activities.

“I’m always really hyped up for spring either way, but it does kind of bring the mood down a little bit on the days I want to go out and have fun, and I see the cottonwood flying, and I know it’s going to be a rough one,” said Aaron Tull, who also suffers from allergies.

Over-the-counter medications are also good options this time of year for those dealing with allergies, but it’s important to check with your personal doctor before you start taking non-prescribed allergy medications

“Those who have any other underlying conditions, mainly asthma, COPD or heart conditions, before you start your medication, you want to talk with your physician first before starting that to make sure that we’re not going to exacerbate anything and there’s no interaction with any current medications,” Dr. Joseph Saffold, a Family Medical Specialist at Wesley Medical Center.

Wichita ranks number one in three different pollen categories by the AAFA for tree, grass, and weed pollen.
