South Kansas City residents frustrated with no answers on continued mail delays

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — It’s a story FOX4 Problem Solvers has been covering for a year and a half.

Since September 2022, FOX4 has spoken to residents from all parts of the Kansas City metro who have been waiting a long time to receive their mail from the United States Postal Service or have never received it all.

Now, we are hearing from people in South Kansas City who say they’ve experienced major mail delays for about a year, and they have received little information or solutions.

“Actually, in the past week alone, we’ve had a whole week with no mail,” said Christina Brown.

About one year ago, Brown noticed packages and letters were not making it to her home, so she went to her local post office to find answers. Shortly after, her packages were delivered normally, but other issues persisted.

“The lettered mail was becoming an issue around fall time. That’s when the lettered mail started to have more time between deliveries and increased recently, about a week or more,” Brown explained.

Brown said the lettered mail delays have continued in the last couple of weeks. She’s heard other neighbors say they’re running into the same problem, so she made another trip to the post office.

“They told us that there is no regular mail carrier for our area, and my husband actually went up there as well, and they told him that they have no plans to hire a permanent carrier,” Brown said. “So basically, it’s people who are working overtime or individuals who just want some extra work or temporary carriers. So we’ve just kind of been at the mercy of them at this point.”

USPS Spokesperson Mark Inglett told FOX4 they have immediate openings for the following positions in the Kansas City metro:

  • City Carrier (PTF-Career Position) $ 22.13/hour

  • Rural Carrier Assistant (RCA) $ 20.34/hour

  • Assistant Rural Carrier (ARC) $20.34/hour Part-Time

The USPS hosts job fairs every Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at its USPS District Building located at 300 W. Pershing Road in Kansas City, Missouri.

Inglett said customers experiencing service issues should contact the USPS directly so staffers can expedite a resolution. You can contact the USPS here: www.usps.com/help

“The official X account of the United States Postal Service, managed by the Social Media staff at USPS HQ, can provide help. For customer service, use @USPSHelp. Customers can also private message us on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/USPS. The Postal Service will diligently continue to investigate customer’s concerns and correct deficiencies to improve service to our communities,” Inglett said in a statement.

“It would be awesome if we could get a permanent mail carrier for our area,” Brown said. “It just seems like it’s outside of regulation for them not to even higher or be willing to hire one for our area. That just doesn’t seem appropriate or right for anyone.”
