South Georgia: The heat is on

Apr. 18—VALDOSTA — South Georgia can look forward to some unseasonably warm weather this week before the temperatures cool down at week's end, forecasters said.

A high pressure ridge over the Gulf of Mexico is helping keep cool air out of the region, said Wright Dobbs, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service's Tallahassee, Fla., office.

Towns in South Georgia should see temperatures in the upper 80s creeping toward 90 around Friday and Saturday under sunny or partly sunny skies, weather service forecasts show.

The normal average high for Valdosta for this time of year is 80 degrees, "so temperatures are definitely above average," said John Feerick, senior meteorologist with the private forecasting firm AccuWeather.com.

Saturday and Sunday, a cold front will start pushing its way into the area, he said.

Overnight lows for the region should range from the lower 60s Thursday and Friday to the upper 50s Sunday and Monday, the forecasts show.

Dobbs didn't see much of a chance of widespread severe weather, while Feerick said a strong isolated thunderstorm with flooding chances couldn't be ruled out over the weekend.
