‘Somebody’s been stabbed’: Neighbor calls 911 after Davenport woman flees knife attack

DAVENPORT, Fla. (WFLA) — “I have an emergency. Somebody’s been stabbed in front of my house,” a 911 caller told a dispatcher last Thursday.

According to police, a 56-year old woman ran to her neighbor’s home in the Highland Meadows area of Davenport, seeking help after she was stabbed more than a dozen times by her cousin.

“Is she breathing?” asked the dispatcher.

“Yes she’s breathing. She’s having a hard time breathing and she’s almost passed out because she’s lacking oxygen,” said the neighbor.

The victim was able to identify her cousin who lives with her in her home as the person who stabbed her, according to police.

Detectives believe he used a kitchen knife.

The victim is still recovering in the hospital.

“The story she tell us is basically as perplexing to her as much as it is to us that he just randomly started stabbing her for no apparent reason,” said Davenport Police Chief Steve Parker.

Chief Parker said the search immediately began for the suspect, 47-year old Douglas Kidd.

In fact, first responders can be heard asking the victim what the suspect was wearing on the 911 call.

Police expected Kidd to flee north, where he has known ties in several states, including Georgia, Maryland and Virginia.

“He is an avid hiker. Our fear was was that he would ditch the car and especially up in the North Carolina up in that area, get on the Appalachian Trail and just disappear,” said Chief Parker.

On Tuesday afternoon, Kidd was arrested in Norfolk, Virginia, when a police officer spotted him on the 3000 block of Granby Street.

“This was a very dangerous individual. Somebody that would just for whatever reason just stab a family member more than 15 times and then flee the state, we were lucky that we were able to get him off the streets,” said Chief Parker.

Kidd was arraigned Wednesday morning in Virginia and is being held as he awaits extradition to Polk County on one count of attempted murder.
