New social district launches in Pineville. Here’s everything you need to know

PINEVILLE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Cheers! Another social district is opening in Mecklenburg County just as the Carolinas’ warm summer-like weather gets underway.

Pineville is launching its first social district on Tuesday afternoon, April 23. This new social district will allow people to enjoy alcoholic beverages in specific areas while out in public.

Launch Date:

The new social district will officially kick off on Tuesday, April 23, 204.

Operating Hours:

The social district operates seven days a week.

It will be accessible from noon until 10 p.m. for individuals 21 and older Monday through Saturday. On Sunday, it will be accessible from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Participating Businesses:

Keep an eye out for businesses displaying green, blue, and red stickers on their windows, indicating their participation in the social district. Social districts have been gaining popularity across the Charlotte area, promoting local businesses and encouraging foot traffic.

Requirements Under North Carolina Law:

  • Patrons must be 21 or older and follow state and federal drinking laws

  • Alcoholic beverages must only be served in designated social district cups

  • Alcoholic beverages must be disposed of before exiting the social district unless entering a business within the social district that allows alcoholic beverages to be brought inside

  • A single patron cannot be sold more than 2 alcoholic beverages at one time

  • Civil Penalty: Any patron or business who violates the social district town ordinance may be fined a civil penalty of $100.

  • Any ABC permittee, non-permittee, or person who violates may be subject to its Social District Permit being revoked, suspended, or permanently banned from participating

  • Pineville Police Department will patrol the downtown area including the Social District under its normal operations

  • Pineville Public Works Department will provide sanitation services within the district, including trash removal and litter pickup
