Senior citizen killed in Apple Valley motorcycle crash

A 68-year-old man died following a collision between his motorcycle and a car near his home in Apple Valley on Saturday, authorities said.

Robert Witt of Apple Valley was killed in the collision, which took place just before 10:30 a.m. at Standing Rock Avenue and Blackfoot Road, San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department officials said.

He was riding a 2011 Harley-Davidson Road Glide west along Standing Rock Avenue just before the crash, officials said. A northbound 2017 Honda Civic was proceeding through the intersection across Standing Rock Avenue from Pine Ridge Avenue onto Blackfoot Road.

"The motorcyclist broadsided the sedan in the intersection," according to a sheriff's department statement.

Witt was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Honda, a 51-year-old Apple Valley woman, remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators, sheriff's officials said.

Witt's home was less than a mile from the crash scene, according to public records.

The intersection is regulated by a stop sign for northbound and southbound traffic, while traffic east and west along Standing Rock Road flows freely.

Deputies from the Sheriff's Major Accident Investigation Team are handling the investigation into the cause of the deadly collision.
