Section of downtown street closed until fall

Apr. 24—HIGH POINT — A blocklong section of E. Commerce Avenue downtown will be closed to traffic through the first of October for extensive exterior work on the facade of the International Home Furnishings Center.

Commerce will be closed between S. Wrenn and S. Hamilton streets, city of High Point officials said. The road was closed effective Monday for exterior maintenance and renovation of the northern-facing exterior wall of the mammoth High Point Market showroom building.

Detour signs are in place to direct motorists. Eastbound traffic on Commerce will turn right on Wrenn, left on E. Russell Avenue, left on Hamilton Street and then right to get back onto Commerce.

Westbound traffic on Commerce will turn right on Hamilton, left on E. High Avenue, left on Wrenn and then right to return to Commerce.

The IHFC work will take place between the spring and fall editions of Market. The spring home furnishings trade show concluded April 17, and the fall Market is set to take place Oct. 26-30.

About 5,000 vehicles per day travel the section of Commerce at the intersection of Hamilton and Wrenn, according to city of High Point Transportation Department traffic counts.

The project also will affect pedestrians, city officials say. Pedestrian access will be provided onto Commerce from Hamilton through a covered pedestrian access way to the High Point Theater and the Commerce Avenue entrance to the IHFC.

The sidewalk along Wrenn will be closed in front of the IHFC throughout the project. Signs will direct pedestrians around the work site.
