Santa Fe police shoot man at Cerrillos Road intersection

Apr. 24—Officers shot a man Wednesday afternoon after he threatened people with a knife, Santa Fe Deputy Chief Ben Valdez said in a statement.

Valdez said Jermaine Garcia, 37, is being charged with five counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, three counts of aggravated assault upon a peace officer with a deadly weapon, two counts of attempting to commit armed robbery, aggravated burglary and criminal damage to property, less than $1,000.

Valdez said at about 2:30 p.m., the Santa Fe Police Department responded to a call about a man — later identified as Garcia — threatening people with a knife at Harrison and Cerrillos roads.

He said when officers arrived, "at least one officer" shot the man "at least one time." Garcia was taken to a hospital.

New Mexico State Police said in a social media post that no officers were injured in the incident.

Garcia is on pretrial release in another case this month involving nonresidential burglary, according to court records.

Valdez said State Police is investigating Wednesday's shooting. He said the officers involved will be placed on paid administrative leave.

Cerrillos Road was closed between Camino Carlos Rey and Siler Road.

Valdez said State Police will release more information.
