Rutherford County Schools managing growth through construction projects

RUTHERFORD COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — The student population for Rutherford County Schools has the district marking another milestone.

“We’ve been the fourth largest district [in Tennessee] and that gap is just getting larger and larger between us and Hamilton, which is number five,” said Rutherford County Director of Schools Dr. James Sullivan. “It’s a very large district. We’re in the top 100 in the country now.”

He explained that the district currently has 51,823 students, which includes Pre-K through 12th grade.

“We’ve got about 950 Pre-K students. We have a voluntary pre-K pre program that is state funded, largely, it’s still some local funded, but then an integrated pre K program for special education and traditional students,” Dr. Sullivan said. “That is part of it. We are right at 51,000, roughly for traditional K through 12. I expect us to be between 52,000 and 53,000 Next year. We’re adding between that thousand and two thousand. I wish it would slow down, because that is a huge.”

There will be 100,000 square feet added to the Riverdale, Oakland, and Smyrna campuses. The projects are expected to be completed by August 2025. That’s the same time a new elementary school is scheduled to be open off Baker Road.
