Rockwall County honors fallen officers as part of National Police Week

May 20—Officers and other officials from across Rockwall County gathered on Friday at Rest Haven Funeral Home for the annual recognition of law enforcement personnel who lost their lives in service to their state and communities took place as part of National Police Week.

Chief Kirk Aldridge from the Royse City Police Department welcomed those in attendance and expressed that National Police Week pays special recognition to those officers who have lost their lives. In 2023, there were 138 line-of-duty deaths across the country, including 11 in Texas.

So far in 2024 there have been 59 line-of-duty deaths across the country, with five occurring in Texas.

The solemn ceremony on Friday opened with a prayer from the Rev. Stephen Grays, RCPD chaplain. Following the presentation of colors by the Rockwall Police Honor Guard, Chief Ed Fowler led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Rockwall County Sheriff Terry Garrett, Judge Frank New and District Attorney Kenda Culpepper expressed their pride and admiration for all law enforcement officers and support staff.

A single bell tolled as each fallen officer's name was read. Charles Aldridge provided the playing of "Taps" and the ceremony closed with a prayer for the continued safety of the officers and strength for their family members.
