Road closures, more roundabouts coming

Apr. 21—ASHLAND — Contractors will begin work today on the two remaining mini-roundabouts along Winchester Avenue as part of the ongoing streetscape project in downtown Ashland, according to the city.

The last two of five total roundabouts will be constructed concurrently at the intersections of 17th and 18th Streets.

According to a city press release, Winchester Avenue will be closed from 16th to 19th Streets for about two weeks. Signage will direct drivers to take alternate routes.

As indicated on a map provided by the city and posted on social media, Winchester Avenue from 16th to 19th will be closed from April 22 until sometime around May 5. Side streets will be closed up to the alley, according to the city. Alley access will be available.

Since the completion of the 14th Street mini-roundabout, construction crews have poured curbs, removed old sidewalks, and prepped for remaining roundabouts and landscaping.

After the 17th and 18th Street mini-roundabouts are complete, the next steps are landscaping, milling and final paving.

The city concluded its release with the following statement: "As always, we encourage people to continue supporting our businesses during this time, and we appreciate everyone's patience as we work toward making downtown Ashland a safer, more walkable environment. We can't wait to see everyone gathering downtown for First Fridays, Makers Markets on the Square and much more in just a few short months."
