RIPTA's CEO failed to 'render aid' at crash scene, summons says. What it means for Avedisian.

WARWICK − The CEO of the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority was under scrutiny Friday after a summons filed in traffic court drew attention to his involvement in a crash and his conduct at the scene.

The summons on file at the Rhode Island Traffic Tribunal accuses Scott D. Avedisian of failing to provide information, render aid and notify police following a crash that took place Wednesday.

Filed by Warwick police on Friday and obtained by The Providence Journal, the summons accuses Avedisian of committing a traffic violation at McDonald's restaurant on Post Road at 6:14 p.m. on Wednesday.

Warwick's police chief, Col. Brad Connor, acknowledged Friday that police are investigating the possibility that someone involved in that crash was also involved in a hit-and-run.

But Connor declined to identify any suspects or make any comment about Avedisian.

The crash at McDonald's on Wednesday involved three vehicles lined up at the drive-thru, Connor said.

One vehicle rear-ended another, he said, and the rear-ended vehicle hit the car in front of it.

Two of the three drivers pulled over to sort it out, Connor said.

But a third vehicle, a black Ford Explorer, left the scene, he said.

Connor emphasized that police have not interviewed the driver of the Ford Explorer and they have not yet issued any citation to that person.

The officer prepared the citation and the summons was automatically sent to the tribunal as part of the process of reporting the crash, Connor said.

The violation identified in the summons does not accuse Avedisian of leaving the scene of a crash.

It says the 59-year-old was driving a black 2019 Ford.

Avedisian, formerly mayor of Warwick, did not immediately respond to a voice message Friday afternoon. He has been RIPTA's director since 2018.
