Some residents to only be charged $15 for internet under NY policy

NEW YORK (PIX11) – New York State will soon require internet providers to charge some low-income residents just $15 a month for internet access.

A federal appeals court reversed a lower court ruling that blocked the policy days before it was supposed to go into effect in 2021.

If internet companies don’t comply, they’ll be fined. Telecom trade groups sued the state, arguing that it would cost them too much money.

Lawmakers have pushed back, saying internet access is a “vital utility.”
