Reported stolen, unloaded gun found in student’s backpack at Hatton High School

LAWRENCE COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) — The Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) says an unloaded stolen gun was found in a student’s backpack Thursday at Hatton High School.

Chief Deputy Brian Covington said that around 8 a.m. Thursday school resource officers at Hatton High School recovered a handgun after receiving an anonymous tip. He said the gun was found unloaded in the 16-year-old student’s backpack that he was walking around the school with.

DCS: AHS, AJHS on heightened alert while DPD investigate threat

LCSO said after running the serial number on the gun, it was determined the gun had been reported stolen.

The student was taken to the juvenile probation office. At the time LCSO is unaware of any personal threat made by the student. The sheriff’s office has increased officer presence at the school due to the incident.
