Redman convicted of second-degree murder

Apr. 19—A Mount Olive Correctional Center inmate pleaded guilty to the 2020 fatal stabbing of a fellow inmate at the correctional center, according to the Fayette County Prosecuting Attorney's office.

Charles Redman pleaded guilty to the felony offense of second-degree murder before Fayette County Circuit Judge Thomas H. Ewing this week.

According to a press release from Fayette County Prosecuting Attorney Anthony Ciliberti Jr., Redman, 55, of Mount Olive, was convicted for stabbing a fellow inmate in 2020 at the Mount Olive Correctional Center in Fayette County.

After his plea, Ciliberti says Redman faces 10 to 40 years in prison when he is sentenced on July 8.

On Nov. 20, 2020 at approximately 8:45 p.m., West Virginia State Police were notified of a stabbing at Mount Olive Correctional Center, the release from Ciliberti noted. Investigators advised troopers that Redman, an inmate, had stabbed another inmate multiple times and that the inmate had died due to his injuries that evening at Montgomery General Hospital.

According to the release, video surveillance footage obtained from the prison showed Redman seated at a card table on the main floor of the residence hall. The victim appeared to walk around the table and sit beside Redman. Redman then attempted to punch the man as he was seated at the table.

The victim left the table and went to an upstairs hallway, followed by Redman. Video surveillance showed Redman approach the victim and begin stabbing him without provocation. The video evidence showed that the victim was not the aggressor at any point during the confrontation, accordng to Ciliberti.

Video surveillance also showed Redman discarding something under a plumbing access door. Investigators recovered an improvised weapon made of a piece of metal that measured about 8 inches long. The weapon appeared to be covered in blood and the State Police confirmed the presence of the victim's DNA on the weapon. The victim suffered four distinct stab wounds, along with multiple abrasions and lacerations, and his autopsy report noted the stab wounds caused the man's death, according to the release.

Redman also indicated to correctional officers after the stabbing that he was responsible for the incident, and confessed to killing the victim during a recorded phone call to a relative.

The crime was investigated by the West Virginia State Police. The case was prosecuted by Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Sarah F. Smith and Deputy Chief Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Jennifer D. Crane.
