Redding man shot by police agrees to nearly 20-year prison sentence

A Redding man who police shot multiple times has been sentenced to nearly 20 years in prison for assaulting officers and threatening them with a knife.

Cody Levi Bailey, 36, pleaded no contest in Shasta County Superior Court on Tuesday to assault with a deadly weapon, resisting arrest, exhibiting a deadly weapon and related charges during a run-in with police in Redding.

The incident began about 4 p.m. on April 10, when Redding police officers kicked Bailey and another man off a privately owned vacant lot near Cypress Avenue in Redding. As Bailey was leaving the area, he threw a rock at officers and threatened them, police said.

Bailey later ran down Cypress Avenue with a knife in his hand toward officer Bryan Cowan, who told Bailey to drop the knife, according to an investigative report of the shooting. When Bailey did not drop the knife or stop running toward Cowan, the officer shot him multiple times, police said.

Much of the incident was captured on surveillance video and officer Jason Rhoads' body-worn camera.

After the shooting, Bailey was taken to the hospital and has recovered. After entering his plea Tuesday, Superior Court Judge Adam Ryan sentenced him to 19 years and 8 months in prison.

Bailey had a prior assault with a deadly weapon conviction in 2017 in Plumas County, according to the Shasta County District Attorney's Office.
