Recall Roundup: GM Recalls Pontiac Solstice, Saturn Sky Roadsters; Toyota to Fix Tundra Bumpers

During the past week, auto manufacturers recalled a total of 225,796 light passenger vehicles. The affected vehicles include models by BMW, Ford Motor Company, General Motors (GM), Hyundai Motor, Nissan Motor, Porsche, Toyota Motor, and Volkswagen Group, dating back to the 2002 model year. The largest recalls come from GM, which is recalling 108,000 vehicles in two separate actions, and from Toyota, which is recalling 72,847 Tundra pickup trucks from the 2017 model year.

2016-2017 BMW X1 xDrive28i, sDrive28i

  • Number of vehicles affected: 4

  • Issue: An instrument panel may not allow the front passenger air bag to deploy properly in the event of a crash.

  • Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the instrument panel free of charge.

  • Timing: The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

2016-2017 Chevrolet Cruze

  • Number of vehicles affected: 17,197

  • Issue: A bracket used in the driver or front passenger seat-back recliner mechanism may have been incorrectly welded to the seat-back frame. As a result, in the event of a crash, the head restraints may not function properly.

  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the front passenger seats, replacing any with seat-back frames that are incorrectly welded, free of charge.

  • Timing: The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020.

2016 Ford C-Max
2016 Ford Focus

  • Number of vehicles affected: 17

  • Issue: The floor pan may have improperly welded left-hand apron joints.

  • Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the apron joints, repairing the vehicle as necessary, free of charge.

  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin March 6, 2017. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332.

2017 Ford F-150

  • Number of vehicles affected: 6,792

  • Issue: The instrument cluster may lose power after the initial vehicle start-up in cold ambient temperatures. Several gauges, including the transmission gear-position indicator, may not illuminate. If the gear-position indicator fails to illuminate, the driver may be unable to tell the transmission shift position.

  • Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the instrument cluster free of charge.

  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin February 7, 2017. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332.

2017 Hyundai Elantra

  • Number of vehicles affected: 33,803

  • Issue: The brake booster may fail, resulting in a loss of power brake assist.

  • Remedy: Hyundai has notified owners, and dealers will replace the brake system booster assembly free of charge.

  • Timing: The recall began on February 6, 2017. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-800-633-5151.

2002 Infiniti QX4
2002 Nissan Pathfinder

  • Number of vehicles affected: 46

  • Issue: These vehicles are equipped with Takata air bag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontal air bag modules used as original equipment or replacement equipment. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the front air bags, these inflators may rupture, with metal fragments possibly striking vehicle occupants.

  • Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger air bag assembly free of charge.

2006-2010 Pontiac Solstice

  • Number of vehicles affected: 91,007

  • Issue: The passenger air bag suppression system (PPS) sensor may become bent or damaged within the front passenger seat, possibly disabling the front passenger air bag.

  • Remedy: The remedy for this recall is still under development.

  • Timing: The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Pontiac customer service at 1-800-762-2737 or Saturn customer service at 1-800-553-6000.

2017 Porsche 911

2017 Porsche 718 Cayman, Cayman S

  • Number of vehicles affected: 4,090

  • Issue: In the affected 2017 911 Carrera, 911 Carrera S, 911 Carrera 4, 911 Carrera 4S, 911 Targa 4, 911 Targa 4S + GTS, 911 Carrera Cabriolet, 911 Carrera S Cabriolet, 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet, 911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet, 718 Boxster, 718 Boxster S, 718 Cayman, and 718 Cayman S vehicles, the screws that fasten the fuel collection pipes in the engine compartment may shear off, resulting in a fuel leak. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire.

  • Remedy: Porsche will notify owners, and dealers will install improved fastening screws free of charge.

  • Timing: The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Porsche customer service at 1-800-767-7243.

2016-2017 Toyota Tundra

  • Number of vehicles affected: 72,847

  • Date of manufacture: The recall affects vehicles from the 2016 and 2017 model years.

  • Issue: The affected vehicles are equipped with a resin rear step bumper and resin reinforcement brackets (vehicles with chrome step bumpers are not affected). In the event of an impact to the corner of the bumper, the resin bracket may be damaged but not be noticed, and if a person subsequently steps on the corner of the damaged bumper, a portion of the bumper may break away.

  • Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the resin rear bumper reinforcement brackets with steel ones and replace the rear bumper tread free of charge. Remedy parts are not currently available.

  • Timing: Toyota will begin notifying owners of the recall on February 15, 2017. A second notice will be mailed when remedy parts are available. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331.

2017 Volkswagen Jetta

  • Number of vehicles affected: 2

  • Issue: These two vehicles are equipped with a 1.4-liter engine that may seize due to an improper casting of the block.

  • Remedy: Volkswagen will either buy back the vehicle or replace the engine block free of charge.

  • Timing: The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298.
