‘Reach some common ground’: Regional Superintendent writes to Champaign School Board

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — At the Monday night Champaign School Board Meeting, board vice president Heather Vasquez revealed the Regional Superintendent emailed all five members about filling the vacancies on their board.

Two board members resigned last month. More than 25 candidates applied to the vacancies, but the meeting to interview the finalists was cancelled due to lack of quorum.

“I am writing to encourage you all to try and get together and reach some common ground on replacing the two members that have resigned from the board,” Regional Superintendent of Education Gary Lewis wrote in the April 18 email. “I understand this isn’t an easy task, but the members of the community did elect you all to handle these types of matters in a professional way.”

If the board cannot agree on a candidate by early May, the decision heads to Lewis’s office.

“I also understand that by school code, if you aren’t able to reach a consensus on two new members in 60 days, the responsibility will fall to my office,” Lewis continued. “This is not something I look forward to doing, but my office will fulfill that duty if needed.”

Lewis said he encourages the board to meet again to work out the problem.

Also at the meeting was approving current Westview Elementary School Vice Principal Dan Nock to become Carrie Busey Elementary School principal, and Enrique Loy as the assistant director of transportation for the school district.
