‘If it rains…it can flood’ – MSD wants residents to understand flood risks

ST. LOUIS – As our active spring severe weather season unfolds, the Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District’s Project Clear is reminding residents across the region to understand their flood risks and learn how to protect themselves and their property.

“A lot of people don’t know this, but everyone lives in a flood zone. If it rains where you live, it can flood where you live,” Bess McCoy, MSD Project Clear spokesperson, said. “People in high-risk flood zones already know they have some risk of flooding. We want to reach people in those low- to moderate-risk flood zones. Because one-in-five flood insurance claims come from low- or moderate-risk areas, and the average flood insurance claim is about $35,000.”

When it rains, it pours, especially for those living in a high-risk flood zone. But like McCoy said, if it rains where you live, it can most certainly flood where you live, even if you’re not in a high-risk zone.

MSD Project Clear encourages St. Louis residents to determine their property’s flood zone with the Know Your Zone tool. The interactive map allows you to enter your exact address to determine your flood zone and the risks to your property. It’s an awareness initiative to encourage residents to find out if they live in a flood zone and to do their research about potential flood insurance.
