Prince George’s County first responders honored for assisting during Baltimore bridge collapse

PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) — When Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed after a cargo ship struck it, first responders across Maryland rushed to provide aid.

First responders from Prince George’s County were honored Thursday for their role in assisting when the bridge collapsed the previous Tuesday.

“We don’t necessarily have to have some mutual aid agreement or any local agreement, it’s just that when our brothers and sisters call, then we answer,” Chief of Police for the Prince George’s County Police Department Malik Aziz said.

Members of the county’s Special Operation Division’s Marine Unit and Underwater Recovery Team spent countless hours searching for the six construction workers who were presumed dead after they fell into the water when the bridge collapsed.

They recovered the work vehicle along with the bodies of two victims inside it.

The members were each presented with the Chief’s Award and the Unit Citation Award.
