Preventing and recognizing strokes: Tips during Stroke Awareness Month

URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — Healthcare professionals are reminding people to stay alert during Stroke Awareness Month.

Strokes are fifth-leading cause of death but are preventable. Factors like smoking, high blood pressure and diet can all play a part in causing one. But activity level and knowing what to do when a stroke happens and knowing what to look out for can help prevent or lessen the damage from one.

“Knowing your risks can help you to work with your medical provider team to be able to address those risk factors to give you a better chance of not having stroke,” said Lindy Drollinger, a Carle nurse.

Drollinger says time is everything and the acronym ‘BE FAST’ is the best way to remember:

B — Balance. Loss of balance or coordination?
E — Eyes. Blurred or lost vision?
F — Face. Drooping or numb?
A — Arms. Weak or numb?
S — Speech. Slurred or jumbled?
T — Time. Call 911. Be fast.

More information about strokes can be found on Carle’s website or the website of the American Stroke Association.
