A Shelby teen was shot and killed Friday in a deadly week that left two dead and several others injured, according to Shelby Police.

Jovan Nazier Omari Sewell, 18, was shot and killed Friday, and Shelby Police said they are still investigating the incident.

According to a press release, at 11:59 a.m., officers from the Shelby Police Department responded to the 600 block of East Warren Street in reference to reports of someone being shot. Once on scene, officers found Sewell suffering from a single gunshot wound at 605 E. Warren St., the release said.

Cleveland County Emergency Medical Services and medical first responders responded to the scene and transported him to Atrium Health – Cleveland where he was later pronounced dead, according to police.

The Shelby Police Department Criminal Investigations Team is actively investigating this incident. At the time of the release, no arrests had been made.

Earlier that week, police said an innocent bystander, 62-year-old Sarah Chambers, was shot and killed outside her home on Live Oak Street, and a separate shooting at Laurel Hill and Washington Square Apartments left three others injured.

Two 15-year-olds were charged with Chamber's death Friday.

Born in Mt. Gilead, Chambers had made her home in Shelby in recent years and was a beloved mother and grandmother, according to her obituary, whose greatest joy was her children and grandchildren.

She is remembered for her kind and gentle nature and always being willing to lend a helping hand to those in need.

"Her warm smile and infectious laughter brightened the lives of all who knew her. She had a knack for making everyone feel welcome and loved, instantly putting them at ease," her obituary said.

Chambers enjoyed spending time outdoors, taking long walks and tending to her garden.

"Sarah's compassion extended beyond humans as she also had a soft spot for animals, often volunteering at local animal shelters," the obituary said. "Sarah's presence will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of knowing her."

Anyone with information concerning the incident on Warren Street is encouraged to contact the Shelby Police Department at 704-484-6845 or report information anonymously by contacting Crime Stoppers of Cleveland County at 704-481-TIPS.
