Police release identity of woman killed in American Fork duplex explosion

AMERICAN FORK, Utah (ABC4) — American Fork authorities identified the woman who was killed in a duplex explosion early Wednesday morning.

On March 20, just before 6 a.m., authorities say an explosion destroyed a duplex near 60 N 370 E in American Fork. Kathy Harrison, 78, who lived next door in the attached unit, died as a result of her injuries, according to American Fork Police.

When authorities arrived on the scene, the owner was “standing outside of what was left of her residence” and was transported to the hospital to be treated for her injuries. A dog was reported missing after the explosion but officials said the dog “somehow survived” and came walking out of the building while crews were on scene.

Emergency crews described the scene as having “debris everywhere” and an active fire in the duplex. They said the “residence was a complete loss” and a nearby house was also damaged.

Police say it was initially believed a gas leak caused the explosion, however, the cause is still under investigation. Police say they will release the findings once the investigation is complete.

Following the fatal incident, Dominion Energy released a statement saying they were doing routine maintenance in the area — including at the duplex — the day prior to the incident. The statement continued to say they are “committed to fully participating in the investigation of this tragic event.”

Kathy Harrison’s obituary described her as a faithful woman with a “loving disposition.”

“The family would like to thank the American Fork Fire and Police departments and all the other first responders who were on scene and brought comfort to us at a very difficult time,” the obituary read.
