Police catch alleged scammer with sting operation

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) said an alleged scammer was caught after police worked with an elderly scam victim who had given money to the suspect twice before.

According to CSPD, an elderly person had fallen victim to a computer scam that led to phone contact with the suspect, identified by police as 29-year-old Lin Chengkang. CSPD said the victim was asked to deliver cash to Chengkang, which police said happened twice over three days.

CSPD said on Thursday, May 9 at around 1 p.m., the Financial Crimes Unit along with patrol officers set a sting to catch Chengkang after the victim was asked to provide more money.

Chengkang was taken into custody without incident. CSPD wants the public to know that if you are directed to take money out of your bank account and give it to a stranger, then it is likely a scam. If you have concerns about your bank account, contact your bank directly.
