Volvo's first U.S.-built car, the S60 sedan debuts next week, and the brand has already announced that the top of the line hybrid version will also be available with their performance package known as Polestar Engineered.

The offer starts off with a software upgrade that brings the twin-engined drivetrain's total output to 415 horsepower and 494 foot pounds of torque.

That's 15 horses and 22 foot-pounds more than what you'd get from a regular S60 T8, and the goodies don't stop there. Polestar will also throw in lightweight wheels and Brembo's mono-block brake calipers, which are cast in one piece and then painted golden in Polestar fashion. More importantly, they also grab slotted discs using performance pads with increased heat tolerance.

If you don't get distracted by the gold seatbelts, the fancy seats, the black chrome exhausts and the emblems, you'll also notice Öhlins' dual-flow valve shock absorbers, which come with the strut bar including an adjustable shock absorber design lifted straight out of the Polestar 1 sports hybrid. Now that part has good old fashioned Polestar handling written all over it.

Interestingly, Volvo says that the software upgrade that changes the gearbox calibration will actually improve fuel economy. Win-win!

But does this mean that Polestar Engineered is the top of what we can expect from Polestar in Volvos of the future? Polestar had this to say about that:

Polestar develops the Polestar bits for Volvo brand cars like the new S60, and the others to come. But we do not build any of these Volvos at our own facility like we used to with the S60/V60 Polestar of years past. They are all Volvo assembly line cars, albeit in low volume. We will develop further components in the future as well for Volvo, what is still TBD/in the works.
