Parkland shooting survivor comments on alleged school shooting threat in Montgomery County

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) — After a high school student was arrested in Montgomery County for allegedly planning a school shooting, survivors of mass shootings told DC News Now that they’re still haunted by gun violence.

The student, Alex Ye’s, arrest happened right before the 25th anniversary of the Columbine mass shooting and six years after the mass shooting in Parkland, Fla.

Wootton High School remains open after school shooting threat

Isabella Benjumea is a survivor of the Parkland shooting.

“You don’t really understand how much it’s going to impact your life, how much it’s going to impact your daily life. It’s not just the few weeks or the few months after it happens,” Benjumea said. “It’s years later when you are by yourself walking the street at night and you don’t feel safe and you see a stranger and you think they’re going to get a gun out.”

Court documents obtained by DC News Now state Ye told counselors he want to “shoot up Wootton High School and his elementary school.”

Survivors like Benjumea are pleading with law enforcement officials to always be alert and to take any signs of potential gun violence seriously.
